Don't Get Conned: Have you TOO become frustrated with all the piano training courses available on the net? How insane is that?! Being a retired music teacher I found most of those to be rather insulting to the average learner. I have studied many of them. Some I got from my students, some I purchased out of curiosity and mostly I was bitterly disappointed. So I decided to come up with this top list for you to check out. The following courses are definitely the ones that impressed me the most & believe me after 40 years in the business of teaching music it’s not easy to impress me. So check them out and leave me some feedback once you get hold of them to tell me what you think.

If you are concerned about objectivity of my reviews, please read the mission statement and also uncut users’ opinions.

Legacy Learning Systems has produced Learn & Master Piano which definitely is a Mercedes among all the courses. My expectations were set quite high as I was already familiar with their products and they didn’t disappoint me. The package is a neatly wrapped box of fourteen DVDs together with CDs and a thick manual. It might seem a bit pricey but if you are really set on learning the piano this is the last thing you’ll ever buy. High quality content is undoubtedly the evidence we’re dealing with true professionals here. Great quality video materials are complemented by the play along CDs where the instructor is a Grammy winner individual.
What is commandable about this course is that you get to practice & play real songs from the get go, no boring drills. And these are popular songs too and not the outdated classics like “My Bony lies over the ocean” or “Wheels on the bus...” like in most of the piano courses I have encountered. Only later more theory like note reading and music basics are introduced not to overwhelm the student. The timing or pace of introducing new elements is just brilliant. The tasks are well presented and not problematic to follow. The Grammy winning instructor’s communication manner is also very friendly what makes it very pleasurable to listen. The play along DVDs are a nice touch since you can be accompanied by them while you learn to play the songs. That makes lessons much more exciting and it is something I always encourage my students to do. The remaining courses I review below do not offer that.

The most impressive, howeve,r is the free support feature that the Legacy Learning Systems offer for their students regardless of the course you purchase. After the purchase you get login details to their website resources including forum where you can brag about you progress and exchange experiences with other students just like you. You can also contact the course’s author who is a very prominent and avid helper in the member’s area section of the webpage. It’s a really cute benefit should you for any reason get stuck with the course instruction.

Essentials:  If you only plan to buy one course this year, get Learn & Master Piano since it is the best piano training course I have had a chance to put my hands on. It does cost a bit more than other electronic courses, however it is in a league of its own offering extremely good value for money and if you are serious about studying the piano, it’s worth its cost.

Tip:
If you are low on budget, they offer payment plans. Currently there is a sale going on so hurry & get your copy now.

The best of the low cost learn piano pieces of software is Rocket Piano. There are no multimedia in the form of DVDs or CDs so it requires practicing in front of the computer. Nevertheless it is very comprehensive and easy to follow. One of the advantages is that you can download the lessons to your computer so there is no additional shipment costs and you get an instant access to the course wherever you live. It might seem a ted problematic to practice everyday in front of the computer but if you are tech savvy you can hook up your signal to the TV on the living room and practice comfortably from the couch. What’s more, Rocket Piano comes with some playable video clips so it is not just the software like many other courses out there.

Essentials:  It is an excellent choice if you are on a budget and if taking lessons in front of your computer doesn’t scare you. At present it is the best computer-based software available on the market.

Another interesting product is Piano for All. On the offer are 10 ebooks, 200 instructional videos and 500 audio files. It is very beginner friendly & instructions are crystal clear. The cost isn’t the lowest, however, there is a lot of content to go through. What I like the most about this is that the ebooks have audio embedded in them and also contain clickable links to video materials.

Essentials:  This course does not offer such good value for money if you consider my first two picks. However, it seems to be a nice addition to a learning library.

Tip: You can select which of the ten ebooks you want to buy.

Piano Is Fun is brilliant for children. Very affordable software-based course dead easy to use. It is purely for kids unlike the website suggests so if there is a pair of tiny feet at your home, it would be a lovely way to start developing the child’s musical intelligence.

Essentials:  If your child displays any sign of musical interest this is the one to go. No need for more expensive stuff until older age.
